School vouchers in Austin: the numbers behind year one

Texas's Education Freedom Accounts reached 6,027 students in the Austin region in their first year. Here is who got them, what they pay and how to be ready for 2027-28.

What a family receives

A student at a participating private school receives $10,474 for 2026-27. An IEP on file can lift that to as much as $30,000 depending on the home district, and a homeschool student receives $2,000.

Where the accounts went

Austin ISD residents held 1,020 funded accounts on July 29, 2026, the 13th-highest district total in Texas. Leander ISD had 574, Round Rock ISD 544, Hays CISD 441, Georgetown ISD 432 and Pflugerville ISD 329. The whole Region 13 service center area counted 6,027.

Inside Austin ISD

City Cast Austin reported in July that 4,896 students living within Austin ISD's boundaries applied and 1,334 had been awarded by then. About 30% of the awarded students had been in public school in 2024-25. The demographic report's lower 1,020 figure counts funded accounts by parent-reported district on July 29.

Not every award was used

Community Impact found that more than 1,000 Austin-area families who were accepted didn't go on to participate. In Leander ISD, 215 of the 574 accepted families opted out. Funds from families who missed the July 15 school-selection deadline went back to the waitlist.

How many schools take it

City Cast Austin counted more than 200 Austin-area private schools approved for TEFA by July. Our directory, pulled from the state finder on October 11, lists every one in the five counties, along with the schools that haven't joined.

Getting ready for year two

Join the Comptroller's interest list, keep last year's federal tax return handy for income verification, and visit schools now. Siblings of current participants are placed first in 2027-28.
